Growing your fish and plants together in an aquaponic system

What is pH? pH is a measurement of the alkalinity or acidity of the water. The optimum range for aquaponics system pH is between 6.8-7.3, which is a compromise between optimal ranges for the fish, plants and bacteria.

Water Testing everyday with a brand new system is essential, until the bacteria cycle is established. This usually takes 2-4 weeks. Once your water has stabilised, testing every week is sufficient. Generally, you will be able to monitor your system by how your plants look and your fish behave. Ideal ranges:

Ammonia less than 1 Nitrite less than 1
Nitrate optimal 2.5 pH between 6.8-7.3

Be confident your fish aren’t living in an environment that could harm them.
